The Self Storage Association UK Conference 2024

The biggest UK Self Storage conference has once again been and gone, and the team are back at our head office this week reflecting on the two-day event.

This was the first time the conference was held at the Telford International, due to outgrowing the Birmingham NEC last year – a reflection of the exciting and growing self storage industry. The two days were jam-packed with industry talks, insights, and networking, followed by a self storage awards dinner.

We were proud to be the platinum sponsors, and we would like to thank the Self Storage Association for giving our CEO, Andy O’Dell, the opportunity to speak during the second day of the conference. We had many highlights this year, but just in case you missed the trade show, we’ve included them below!

This year, we wanted to make a difference. So we donated an incredible cash prize of £1000 to a winner’s chosen charity. During our presentation, we were thrilled to announce that Adrian Standerwick, Founder of Active CCTV & Surveillance won the cash prize. Adrian donated the money to C.R.Y, a charity close to his heart.

The second day was followed by an awards dinner and a very late night for some. Although there were sore heads in the morning, that didn’t stop people from attending our presentation. Our CEO, Andy O’Dell reflected on the past year at Kuboid and hinted at upcoming innovations and services. All to be revealed soon…

UK Self Storage Industry Report Launch 2024

An anticipated moment in the industry is the launch of the annual industry report. Compiled by the SSA UK in collaboration with Cushman & Wakefield, the report is based on data throughout 2023. It covers all viewpoints of the industry, including data from operators, customers and the general public.

Headlines include: 

• The industry surpassed the billion mark with an annual turnover of £1.08bn
• An increase in the churn rate to 98% from 81% the previous year
• The average rental return has seen a modest increase to £26.23 per sq ft, up by 1%
• There has been an 8.1% increase in storage space available over the year, with 60 million sq ft of self storage space now in the UK
• A notable 95% of SSA UK Members reported that adding sustainability improvements increased their business value, a 17% increase from last year
• 44% of operators are planning more investment in new sites, with a 5% increase in interest for mixed-use developments.
